Well, I'm home from New York Comic Con. This is Pamela Paige, one of the models in the book Comic Artist's Photo Reference: Women and Girls, which I had the fun of editing. I got to meet her at the con--she's the 8th wonder of the world, if you ask me.
Soon, I'll post more about her and everyone else I met.
I'm finally sitting down to eat and rest after hours on my feet at NY Comic Con. I find myself thinking back on the start of my trip.
Some of my trip preparations went smoothly, such as getting business cards printed. They were supposed to ship Tuesday and arrive Thursday, and they did.
Getting new glasses was another story. I've been needing new glasses, and I liked the idea of getting them in time for my trip. The only reason was vanity, really. New glasses just make a person feel a little more spiffy. It's kinda like getting new shoes, except they're $500 shoes and they're on your face.
My regular eye doctor couldn't get me in soon enough. So I thought I'd try one of those eyeglass chain stores. I got an exam scheduled quickly, and I picked out frames I really liked. There was even a fat discount for being a member of AAA.
One of my eyes is pretty bad and needs a strong lens, one they didn't have available on site. So one-hour service wasn't an option; they had to send my order out. I was worried the timing wouldn't work out. A few days later I was thrilled to get the call: Your glasses are ready!
So I went in to pick them up and have them fitted... and damned if the right lens wasn't wrong. Not just as in "Oh, these feel a little funny because I'm not used to them yet." I mean wrong, as in very blurry. So, long story short, I'm wearing my old glasses. I'll have to go back next week for a "prescription check" and wait for remade lenses.
What a pisser! I don't want to name names as to where I got the exam and lenses. For all I know, the people who crafted those lenses normally give great service. It wouldn't be fair to criticize the lens crafters on the basis of one anecdotal experience.
