NYCC: Photos (some mine, some not)

My Photos

Here's a link to my Flickr so you can view my photos from the Comic Con trip.

Another Guy's Photos

I didn't go out of my way to take pictures of the many costumed attendees at the New York Comic Con. I was just too busy meeting people. That's no loss, though, because you can go enjoy Steve Bunche's convention photos. His collection is hard to beat for sheer breadth as well as knowledgeable background commentary on the costumes.

If you don't have time to read all of Steve's photo captions, at least do a Find on his page for Donna Troy and Lucas groupies (no quotation marks), and read those. Hilarious!

NYCC: Ah, the Mammaries

Well, I'm home from New York Comic Con. This is Pamela Paige, one of the models in the book Comic Artist's Photo Reference: Women and Girls, which I had the fun of editing. I got to meet her at the con--she's the 8th wonder of the world, if you ask me.

Soon, I'll post more about her and everyone else I met.

On the way back to the hotel tonight, I looked up for no particular reason and happened to see this plaque marking where Nikola Tesla died.

NYCC: A Story About My Glasses

  • Apr 19, 2008

I'm finally sitting down to eat and rest after hours on my feet at NY Comic Con. I find myself thinking back on the start of my trip.

Some of my trip preparations went smoothly, such as getting business cards printed. They were supposed to ship Tuesday and arrive Thursday, and they did.

Getting new glasses was another story. I've been needing new glasses, and I liked the idea of getting them in time for my trip. The only reason was vanity, really. New glasses just make a person feel a little more spiffy. It's kinda like getting new shoes, except they're $500 shoes and they're on your face.

My regular eye doctor couldn't get me in soon enough. So I thought I'd try one of those eyeglass chain stores. I got an exam scheduled quickly, and I picked out frames I really liked. There was even a fat discount for being a member of AAA.

One of my eyes is pretty bad and needs a strong lens, one they didn't have available on site. So one-hour service wasn't an option; they had to send my order out. I was worried the timing wouldn't work out. A few days later I was thrilled to get the call: Your glasses are ready!

So I went in to pick them up and have them fitted... and damned if the right lens wasn't wrong. Not just as in "Oh, these feel a little funny because I'm not used to them yet." I mean wrong, as in very blurry. So, long story short, I'm wearing my old glasses. I'll have to go back next week for a "prescription check" and wait for remade lenses.

What a pisser! I don't want to name names as to where I got the exam and lenses. For all I know, the people who crafted those lenses normally give great service. It wouldn't be fair to criticize the lens crafters on the basis of one anecdotal experience.

Right now I'm attending a panel with staff and past winners of the New York TV Festival.

It's more interestting than it looks.

I have my mental list of booths to check out. Coming soon: more updates from the floor.

NYCC Opening Night: Goal #1

Had a great first few hours on the show floor! So great, I forgot to take any pictures with the camera phone! I'll get some pics off the big camera later. For now, the highlights will have to be text-only.

My first goal was to locate booth 2447 and meet my author and pal, the incomparable Buddy Scalera. Found him! For about three years, we've emailed, IMed, phoned, and collaborated via FTP'd InDesign files... but we had never met in person. Now, we have. Technology makes the physical world seem smaller, while it makes our personal worlds larger. Gotta love it.

In honor of this occasion, I'll post the first picture of Buddy I ever saw: a test shot he did for his first book, using slide film. Tough-guy expression... automotive t-shirt... I'll admit, I was scared at first. Soon, though, it was clear why people call Buddy "the nicest guy in comics."
